More about Waterford Institute of Technology

Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) is the major provider of higher education in the South East. It is one of the largest IOT's in Ireland, with almost 10,000 students and 900 staff.

From the Institute’s establishment in 1970, the student community has grown to 8,000 full-time and 1,500 part-time students including 800+ international students from more than 70 countries.

WIT is clustered around five sites in Waterford City & County all within 5km of the city centre. The main campus is located on the Cork Road in Waterford. Facilities at all of these sites have seen considerable re-generation and development over the past decade including the investment of over €120 million in new buildings including state of the art library, Information & Communication Technology buildings, nursing & health sciences building, tourism & leisure building, sports campus and research & innovation buildings.

The portfolio of academic programmes at WIT is extensive, ranging from Higher Certificate right through to post-doctoral research and covering the Humanities, Health and Nursing, Science and Informatics, Engineering and Architecture, Business and Education. WIT’s range and scope reflect the changing needs of the South East as well as the country as a whole.

The relationship with the South East region is a defining characteristic of the Institute. The Institute has important relationships with community groups, local government, Chambers of Commerce and industry groupings and these collaborations often lead directly to programme development and delivery, research collaboration and other joint initiatives. WIT has particularly close relationships with industry & commerce, the professions and the public service for research, consultancy, student and graduate placements etc. A culture of entrepreneurship and innovation is fostered at all levels in the organisation.

WIT has formal academic exchange and research partnerships with over 40 universities worldwide. These range from the old established Universities such as Oxford, Trinity College Dublin and University College London to newer technological universities such as Budapest University of Technology and Nanjing University of Science and Technology.
WIT is one of the leaders in research in the Institute of Technology (IoT) sector. In the last ten years, the Institute has secured over €140 million in external research funding. The Institute has secured funding from all of the major funding agencies, including SFI, ERC and Enterprise Ireland. At the core of the Institute’s research ethos is its commitment to engagement and knowledge exchange with research partners, regional and national stakeholders and industry and WIT has an established record of large scale research collaborations with both indigenous enterprise and multi-nationals.

WIT has been a leader in the Irish higher education sector with regard to the provision of lifelong learning opportunities and access for disadvantaged groups and many of WIT's successful initiatives have been adopted by other colleges. WIT has responded to the growing requirement to provide educational routes for non-standard learner groups by developing expertise in the areas of flexible accreditation, outreach and flexible delivery modes.

The Institute is a major cultural resource for the region through its arts and music programmes, exhibitions, collections such as the Pauline Bewick ‘Seven Ages’ collection and events such as New Music Week. Over its forty year history WIT says it has made a distinct social and cultural contribution to the life of the region in addition to serving its educational needs.
Providing a caring and supportive learning environment for its students has long been a priority at WIT. The range and quality of student support services is excellent and examples include the Student Life and Learning Centre and the Medical Centre which provide care, counselling, guidance and support for students.
